SHOSHOLOZA CHARITY FUNCTION RHODES HOUSE
Captain Salvatore Sarno, Syndicate Head and founder of Team Shosholoza, Africa’s first ever challenger for
the prestigious America's Cup, hosted a two-tired charity programme to raise funds for the SAGDB
(South African Golf Development Board) and Izivunguvungu MSC Foundation for Youth, a sail training
school in Simonstown. The charity programme opened with an evening auction on the 9th of February 2006 at
Rhodes House where we, together with the local ‘who’s who’ rubbed shoulders with a host of international celebrities, at
a bidding for a variety of priceless Shosholoza ‘moments’.
The team name, Shosholoza, is a word with roots deep in South African culture. Originally a motivational
work song with a long history among mine workers, and those engaged in hard, physical labour it became
a symbolic anti-apartheid song during the struggle years and more recently a national cult song at international sporting events Translated, it’s understood to mean, ‘go forward’ or ‘make way’, an
appropriate sentiment for an America’s Cup team.
Team Shosholoza is the first ever America’s Cup Challenger from the African continent. The crew is mostly South African club sailors who have had to make the giant leap to professional yacht racing in just 18 months. Despite having the smallest budget and being one of the smallest of the 12 teams, Team Shosholoza’s
racing record to date is impressive with typical African spirit bringing the team five match race victories
and the title of "most improved team" on the 2005 America's Cup circuit.
Team Shosholoza has also competed in nine Louis Vuitton Acts or America's Cup precursor regattas in France, Spain, Sweden and Italy.
